This past week our family spent a week on vacation in Florida. We all love the water so we spent time at the beach, in the pool, in the jacuzzi, and on a boat tour. Our little guy Brock even hit golf balls into a lake that serves as a driving range (floating golf balls and all). Definitely a water themed week away.
My wife will tell you I’m not a very good vacationer. While I’ve become better over the years, unplugging is not really my forte. Even so, one thing I have noticed during our past vacations is that you tend to look at things differently than in our day-to-day lives. Purely by extracting yourself from your normal routine, one can’t help but to see things from a different point of view.
Several times this past week I came across situations that would be considered a flashback to days past, or as some would put it, “Old School.” Here is a list things that crossed my path from just this past week…..
We love hole in the wall breakfast places. We found one that had posted outside their door and also at the top of the menu – “No credit cards, cash only.” Definitely Old School.
A USA Today article about a cell phone company offering people $1,000 to trade their smart phone for a flip phone for one week. Think you could do it?
Sports Business Journal spent a day following Tampa Bay Sports Commission Executive Director Rob Higgins. Rob is one of the best in the business, so it was no surprise to me that his daily schedule included time to “…reach out to three different people to just check in.” Classic style by Rob, definitely an Old School way to keep relationships strong.
At that same hole-in-the-wall breakfast joint we noted above, a truly epic sign hung on the wall. Here is a link to a photo I took of the sign – http://www.huddleupgroup.com/no-wifi-sign.
WOW. A throwback to 1995. Now that is definitely Old School.
The lessons here for me are these….. Unplug. Take time to look at things from a different perspective. Be on the lookout for how you can embrace the Old School in the new world.
Have a great week ahead my friends.
